Alternatives & optional items

Besides normal positions, a quote knows two special forms: alternative positions (either/or) and optional positions (add-on by choice). Both are set by the merchant on the detail page.

Alternative positions (either/or)

Positions sharing the same group are alternatives — the customer picks exactly one of them on acceptance.

How the merchant sets up alternatives

  1. On the relevant positions, under "Options", enter the same group (e.g. Material).
  2. Mark one of the positions as the default alternative. The first position of a group automatically becomes the default; there is exactly one default per group.

Behaviour

  • In the quote and in the PDF, only the default alternative counts in the quote total.
  • In the customer account the group appears as a coherent block with radio buttons; the default alternative is preselected, with the hint "Please choose one option from this group."
  • On acceptance the chosen alternative goes into the cart (without a choice, the default alternative; failing that, the first of the group).
  • Alternatives survive revising.

Optional positions

An optional position is an add-on the customer can include on acceptance — it is not part of the binding total.

How the merchant flags a position as optional

On the detail page, enable "Optional" at the position.

Behaviour

  • Optional positions do not count in the binding quote total.
  • In the PDF they are shown separately at the end of the position table (without a position number), with a note that they are chosen on acceptance.
  • In the customer account they appear with a checkbox and the "Optional" badge; only ticked optional positions go into the cart on acceptance.
  • With “Convert to order” too, the merchant can choose which optional positions to include.

Storefront hint text

"Optional positions are not included in the grand total — you choose them when accepting."
